Stringing Between Parts
Reduce thin strands of filament appearing between separate areas of your print.
Stringing occurs when molten filament leaks from the nozzle while the print head travels between separate parts of the model.
The first thing to check is filament condition. Moist filament can bubble and ooze more easily. PETG, TPU and nylon are particularly sensitive to moisture.
Next, check retraction settings. Retraction pulls filament slightly backwards before a travel movement to reduce nozzle pressure.
Do not immediately increase retraction dramatically. Excessive retraction can cause clogs, heat creep or inconsistent extrusion.
Try reducing nozzle temperature in small increments of around 5°C. Printing hotter makes filament more fluid and increases the likelihood of oozing.
Make sure travel movements are reasonably fast. The less time the nozzle spends travelling between features, the less opportunity there is for filament to leak out.
Some slicers include options such as avoid crossing walls, wipe while retracting or travel within infill. These can reduce visible stringing.
A small amount of fine stringing can often be removed easily after printing, but heavy stringing usually indicates that temperature, retraction or filament moisture needs attention.
Common causes: excessive nozzle temperature, wet filament, incorrect retraction, slow travel movements.
